Let’s get creative!

For the 2023 Olalla Hat Contest, we are challenging you to wear the most original hat or headpiece inspired by Olalla, WA. This is an relatively broad theme that can be defined and interpreted in any number of ways, so let your creativity shine, and have fun in the process! You can learn more about Olalla here.

What are the rules?

The Olalla Hat Contest is a in-person competition. It is open to anyone who buys a ticket for the September 17, 2023 “Hats & Bubbles in the Vineyard” event. Tickets are on sale on the Olalla Wines website.

Judging

Three winners will be chosen by a panel of expert judges, who will be looking at the following criteria:

  • Creativity & originality,
  • Proportion, balance & color,
  • Relevance with the Olalla theme,
  • Visual appeal & impact.

The marks awarded for each criterion will be added together and the top three scores will determine the first, second and third prize winners. Be prepared to briefly explain your choice of hat to the judges to maximize your chances of winning!

The Prizes

Several prizes will be shared between the 2023 Olalla Hat Contest winners and include:

  • One French cooking class for 4 people by French Moods
  • Three Life & Wellness online coaching sessions by Holistic Living Coaching
  • One “French Moods” gift basket
  • One Interior Design consultation & recommandation for one room in your home or work space by Luxense

The Judges

Carol Virak

Carol’s life-long interest in Art includes Director of Education at the Tacoma Art Museum, owner/curator for the Contemporary Craft Gallery in Tacoma, and her appointment to the Tacoma Art Commission. She also earned a “Time Magazine Person of the Year Award” and was appointed to the National Endowment for the Arts as a “Fellow” to study funding process for Arts Organizations around the country. Carol maintains a working studio/gallery at her home in Gig Harbor.

Janet Steiner

Janet is a marketing and branding expert at N2 Publishing, leading provider of intimate, social newsletter magazines for some of the most affluent and hard to reach neighborhoods across the United States. Everything that is in N2 publications is about and for the residents that live there. They just love getting a magazine sent to them each month that is all about them! N2 also connects residents and businesses owners face to face at social events.

Gregg Olsen

Gregg is a New York Times, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal bestselling author of nonfiction books and novels, most of which are crime-related. The subjects of his true crime books include convicted child rapist and school teacher Mary Kay Letourneau, product tampering killer Stella Nickell, and Dr. Linda Burfield Hazzard’s infamous Starvation Heights sanatarium. He has also successfully breathe new life into Olalla’s beloved Al’s Butcher Shop and Grocery.
